ZANSKAR: A two-day Camp Office of the Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO), Kargil, concluded in Zanskar on Tuesday, providing a range of transport-related services to residents and reducing the need for travel to Kargil for routine documentation and regulatory procedures.
During the camp, the ARTO team conducted fitness inspections of commercial and non-commercial vehicles, processed renewals of driving licences, issued permits and registrations, and carried out driving tests for applicants seeking fresh licences.
The initiative was aimed at improving public access to transport services in the newly created district, where geographical constraints often make travel to Kargil time-consuming and costly.
On the sidelines of the programme, ARTO Kargil officials held discussions with Deputy Commissioner Zanskar and Superintendent of Police Zanskar on transport-related challenges facing the district and measures to strengthen coordination among departments for better service delivery.
The camp also featured a road safety awareness programme organised jointly by ARTO Kargil, Zanskar Degree College and Zanskar Police. The panel discussion, conducted under the leadership of Principal Dr. Amjad Abbasi, focused on traffic management, responsible driving and measures to improve road safety across the district.
Students and stakeholders actively participated in the deliberations and put forward several suggestions aimed at enhancing traffic discipline and reducing road accidents.
Superintendent of Police Zanskar Rigzin Sangdup attended the programme as Chief Guest, while ARTO Kargil Khadim Hussain was the Guest of Honour. SHO Zanskar Rigzin also participated in the discussions.
Officials said the outreach initiative reflects ongoing efforts to make public services more accessible in remote areas while promoting greater awareness of road safety and responsible vehicle use.
