KHALTSE: The Agriculture Department, Khaltsi, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Leh, organised a Khet Bachao Abhiyan programme at Temisgam on Tuesday, bringing together 46 farmers to promote sustainable and environmentally responsible agricultural practices.

The awareness-cum-training programme focused on soil health management, natural farming and the conservation of natural resources to improve farm productivity while reducing dependence on chemical inputs.

Addressing the participants, Dr. Diskit Dolker, Scientist at KVK Leh, highlighted the objectives of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan and emphasised the need for adopting sustainable farming methods to ensure long-term agricultural and environmental sustainability. She stressed the importance of maintaining soil fertility and preserving natural resources to strengthen the farming sector.

A key feature of the programme was a practical demonstration on natural farming conducted under the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA). Agriculture Extension Officer, Khaltsi, Tundup Namgyal, demonstrated the preparation and application of Jeev Amrit, a microbial culture widely used in natural farming.

He explained its ingredients, preparation process, dosage and benefits, noting that the formulation helps improve soil fertility, enhances nutrient availability and reduces reliance on chemical fertilisers and external agricultural inputs.

Farmers actively participated in the interactive sessions and engaged with experts on various aspects of sustainable agriculture. Participants expressed interest in adopting natural farming practices and implementing the techniques demonstrated during the programme.

Officials said the initiative served as an important platform for disseminating practical knowledge on eco-friendly farming methods and encouraging wider adoption of sustainable agricultural technologies in the region.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, with officials reiterating the commitment of the Agriculture Department and KVK Leh to strengthening farmers’ capacities through field-based demonstrations, awareness campaigns and technical support aimed at promoting resilient and sustainable agriculture.
