SRINAGAR, Aug 25: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Kashmir of the Crime Branch J&K has filed a charge-sheet against a man for allegedly cheating the family of a cancer patient of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of arranging medicines at cheaper rates.

The charge-sheet was presented before the Court of the Sub-Judge, Srinagar, in connection with FIR No. 25/2026 registered under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The accused has been identified as Afaq Ahmad Thug, son of Ghulam Qadir, a resident of New Colony, Hazratbal, near Shiwala Mandir, Anantnag, presently residing at Green Enclave, Barmuni Road, Sunjwan, Jammu.

According to the Crime Branch, the case was registered following a written complaint alleging that the accused had offered to arrange medicines for the complainant’s wife, who was suffering from cancer, at substantially lower prices.

The complainant allegedly paid lakhs of rupees to the accused for procuring the medicines. However, the accused allegedly failed to supply the medicines and did not fulfil his commitment.

During the investigation, the EOW Kashmir said it collected evidence that substantiated the allegations made in the complaint.

The probe also revealed that the accused and the complainant had been schoolmates at a boarding school more than four decades ago. According to investigators, this past association was relevant to the trust placed by the complainant in the accused.

After completing the investigation, the Crime Branch presented the charge-sheet before the competent court for judicial determination in accordance with law.

The agency clarified that filing of the charge-sheet marks the completion of its investigation, while the question of guilt or otherwise will be decided by the competent court.

The Crime Branch has advised the public to remain cautious against economic frauds, particularly schemes involving promises of unusually cheap medicines or other financial inducements.

It urged people to verify such claims before making payments and report suspicious financial activities or fraudulent transactions to the SSP, Economic Offences Wing Kashmir.
