Zanskar, Sept 09: The emphasis on psychological well-being as an essential pillar of disaster preparedness took centre stage in Zanskar on September 8 during a training workshop on psychosocial care in disaster management. Organised at the Government Degree College in collaboration with the Community Health Centre, Padum, the programme was facilitated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, NIMHANS, and the National Health Mission Ladakh.
Riyaz Ahmad, RKSK Block Coordinator, opened the proceedings with an in-depth presentation that placed mental health at the heart of disaster response and recovery. His address underscored how emotional resilience and psychological support can ease the path to rehabilitation for communities struck by adversity.
Building on this foundation, Ms. Fatima Kaneez conducted an interactive session that drew the active participation of students and faculty alike. Through demonstrations and hands-on activities, she highlighted practical methods of psychosocial care, ensuring that theoretical learning was complemented by experience-based understanding.
The workshop progressed with sessions on disaster management strategies that mapped out preparedness and response mechanisms, while spotlighting counselling as a tool to alleviate trauma. The exchange with students further reinforced the idea that resilience depends as much on mental strength as on material readiness.
Guided by the supervision of Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, Principal of the college, the programme concluded with closing words from Dr. Mohammad Hussain. Expressing gratitude to the facilitators, he reaffirmed the value of such community-driven initiatives in shaping Zanskar into a society better equipped to withstand crises.
As the gathering dispersed, it left behind a resonant message: disaster management is not merely about infrastructure and relief operations but also about nurturing the mental and emotional fortitude that allows a community to endure and recover.
