Kargil, Sept 09: The District Hub for Empowerment of Women under Mission Shakti today organized an awareness programme at the Government Degree College campus, focusing on legal safeguards for women. The initiative formed part of a ten-day nationwide drive launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
The session opened with an address by Aamina Banoo, Gender Specialist, who underlined the objectives of Mission Shakti and its role in strengthening women’s rights. The event drew active participation from students, faculty, non-teaching staff and community workers including ASHAs, ANMs, Anganwadi workers and Mission Shakti personnel.
Resource persons from the District Legal Services Authority, Kargil, engaged the audience with detailed deliberations. Advocate Zarina Banoo explained the contours of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act 2013, elaborating on responsibilities of institutions and penalties for offenders. Advocate Kacho Manzoor Ali expounded on the Domestic Violence Act, Dowry Prohibition Act and the Immoral Trafficking Act, emphasizing their implementation and relevance in safeguarding vulnerable sections. Senior Panel Lawyer Kacho Ali Khan also joined the proceedings, lending further insights from the perspective of legal aid.
The interactive session concluded with participants seeking clarifications on practical aspects of law enforcement and remedies available. Resource persons addressed queries to ensure deeper understanding among frontline workers who often act as the first point of contact in cases of abuse or exploitation.
The programme also stressed the importance of community-level awareness on the PCPNDT Act to curb discriminatory practices and promote equitable health outcomes. By engaging students alongside grassroots workers, the initiative sought to bridge knowledge gaps and encourage informed advocacy.
With Kargil’s college campus as the platform, the event offered both academic and social resonance, placing legal literacy at the forefront of women’s empowerment efforts.
