Women Skaters from Ladakh’s lead India to Historic Bronze at IIHF Asia Cup Ice Hockey

Leh, Aug 14: In the icy expanse of Ladakh, where frozen ponds serve as makeshift rinks through winter, a group of determined women have etched their name onto the international stage. India’s women’s ice hockey team, powered largely by players from the Himalayan region, clinched bronze at the IIHF Asia Cup in Al Ain, UAE, with a spirited 3–1 win over Thailand in the playoff for third place.

The victory marked the culmination of years of perseverance against daunting odds. Isolation, limited training facilities, and deep-rooted scepticism could not keep these athletes off the ice. For Captain Tsewang Chuskit, the journey was shaped by memories of elders questioning why a girl would share the rink with boys. Forward Diskit C Angmo first encountered the sport through her brother, never imagining she would one day wear the national colours and inspire others to dream bigger.

Rinchen Dolma’s return to competitive action came just five months after becoming a mother, her goal in the bronze-medal match a defiant answer to all who doubted her. On the bench, Assistant Coach Ali Amir channelled his own unfinished playing dreams into guiding the team to glory, his eyes moist as the tricolour was raised in celebration.

Sonam Angmo summed up the team’s spirit, saying that every stride was for the nation and for those who continued to believe despite the absence of strong backing. Their extraordinary rise — from frozen village ponds to the glare of an international podium — has been chronicled in the short film Sound of Courage, a tribute to their grit and determination.

From the wind-battered valleys of Ladakh to the bright lights of the Asia Cup, these women have proven that the chill of the mountains can forge champions whose fire burns far beyond the rink.
