New Delhi, Feb 19: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu notice Thursday of shady NGOs mimicking its name and logo, firing off notices to all states and UTs to hunt them down and shut them within two weeks.
The rights panel flagged how “deceptively similar” names—like a Delhi-registered “National Human Rights Council (NHRC)” boasting fake ties to NITI Aayog, MCA, and Social Justice Ministry—erode public trust, siphon funds, and confuse officials into thinking they’re legit.
Despite past warnings, these imposters persist, misleading folks into believing they’re NHRC-linked. A Karnataka “State Chairman” card added to the scam. NHRC slammed the “misleading” titles and publicity stunts.
Chief secretaries and police chiefs must identify violators, cancel registrations, and act fast—while sensitizing registries. Karnataka and Delhi bosses get two weeks to report on this specific outfit. The move aims to protect the real NHRC’s mandate amid rising human rights complaints.
