DRASS: Braving inclement weather conditions, a large number of astronomy enthusiasts, students, tourists and local residents gathered at the Tourist Bungalow in Drass on the fifth day of Ladakh Astro Week 2026, reflecting growing public interest in astronomy and astro-tourism in the region.
The event featured expert sessions on astronomy, space observation and the expanding astro-tourism potential of Ladakh, presented by specialists from the Indian Astronomical Observatory.
Deputy Commissioner Drass, Imteeaz Kacho, attended the programme along with Councillor of Bhimbhat Constituency, Abdul Wahid, besides sub-divisional officers, faculty members and students from Degree College Drass and Higher Secondary School Drass.
During the sessions, experts discussed various aspects of astronomy and highlighted Ladakh’s geographical advantages for astronomical observation, particularly its high-altitude terrain, dry climate and minimal light pollution.
Participants also visited an astrophotography exhibition and stalls showcasing local culture, traditional handicrafts, handloom products and regional cuisine, adding a cultural dimension to the scientific event.
The enthusiastic turnout despite adverse weather conditions underscored the increasing popularity of astronomy-related public outreach programmes in Ladakh, where initiatives linked to astro-tourism and dark sky conservation have gained momentum in recent years.
Organisers said Ladakh Astro Week aims to promote scientific awareness while simultaneously showcasing the Union Territory’s cultural heritage and potential as a destination for astronomy tourism.
