Leh, Mar 28: World Theatre Day was observed with enthusiasm at Lotsava Auditorium in Leh on Friday, bringing together theatre practitioners, artists, and cultural enthusiasts in a collective effort to highlight the role of theatre in society.
The event was organised by the Ladakh Theatre Organization in collaboration with the Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. It witnessed participation from members of the artistic community and the public, underscoring theatre’s continuing relevance as a medium of expression and cultural continuity.
Jigmet Raftan, President of the Youth Wing of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, attended as Chief Guest, while Kunzes Dolma Jawo, President of the Women Wing of LBA, was the Guest of Honour. Officials including Tsewang Paljor and Nazir Hussain were also present, along with theatre artists and enthusiasts.
Addressing the gathering, Tsewang Paljor underlined the role of theatre in portraying societal realities and fostering awareness. He described theatre as an enduring medium for communication and cultural expression, while calling for sustained efforts to preserve and promote theatrical traditions in Ladakh.
Founder of the Ladakh Theatre Organization, Mipham Otsal, emphasised the relevance of World Theatre Day and advocated the introduction of theatre education in academic institutions. He noted that engaging young people in theatre could help nurture appreciation for Ladakh’s storytelling traditions and performing arts.
The programme featured theatrical and musical performances by local artists, drawing appreciation from the audience. The presentations reflected the region’s artistic capabilities and demonstrated how theatre can convey social and cultural narratives effectively.
Organisers stated that the observance of World Theatre Day serves to acknowledge the contributions of theatre practitioners and to reinforce the role of performing arts in strengthening cultural identity.
The event concluded with participants commending the organisers for creating a platform that encourages local talent and fosters the growth of theatre culture in Ladakh.
