Shimla, Mar 28: Emphasising the central role of youth in shaping the nation’s future, Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta on Friday said that nation-building extends beyond economic growth and technological progress, requiring a generation driven by discipline, dedication and a spirit of selfless service.
Addressing a seminar and youth felicitation ceremony organised by the Sunil Upadhyay Educational Trust at the historic Gaiety Theatre here, Gupta urged young people to look beyond personal ambitions and draw inspiration from individuals who devoted their lives to society and the country.
He said the life and ideals of Sunil Upadhyay continue to guide youth towards national service, adding that committed efforts have the capacity to shape the direction of society and the nation.
Describing the event as more than a formal gathering, Gupta said it served as a tribute to a personality whose life embodied sacrifice, courage and patriotism. He noted that Upadhyay demonstrated a strong commitment to public service from a young age.
Recalling a defining episode from Upadhyay’s early life, the Lieutenant Governor said that during the period of the Emergency, he participated in a Satyagraha movement as a Class X student and was imprisoned for several months. Gupta described this as a reflection of his firm resolve and commitment to democratic values.
He further stated that despite health challenges, Upadhyay continued to work actively for social welfare, setting an example for future generations. His contributions, Gupta said, remain a source of enduring inspiration.
Highlighting national developments, Gupta said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is advancing through the energy, talent and innovation of its youth. He referred to initiatives such as Skill India, Startup India, Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat as avenues creating opportunities in employment, entrepreneurship and skill development.
The Lieutenant Governor also pointed to reforms under the National Education Policy, stating that the education system has become more practical and aligned with employment needs, enabling youth to contribute more effectively to national development.
Referring to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, Gupta said the active participation of youth is essential to achieving a self-reliant and value-based society. He stressed that young people must be equipped not only with knowledge and technical skills but also with a strong sense of responsibility and service.
Urging the youth to remain focused and resilient, he said that challenges are inevitable but can be overcome through determination, hard work and confidence.
Earlier, the Lieutenant Governor felicitated young achievers for excellence in various fields.
Former National President of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Professor Nagesh Thakur, and Vice-President of the Trust, Ashok Sharma, also addressed the gathering, recalling the contributions of Sunil Upadhyay.
Secretary of the Trust, Professor Surendra Sharma, presented the vote of thanks. Legislators Rakesh Jamwal and Surender Shourie, along with other dignitaries, were present on the occasion.
