Leh, Sept 24: The District Level Committee on Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 resolved today to intensify efforts for turning Leh into a garbage-free city, with emphasis on strengthening solid waste management, wastewater treatment and sewerage systems. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner LAHDC Leh, Romil Singh Donk, IAS, at the DC Office.
Officials from the Public Health Engineering Department, Municipal Committee Leh, District Panchayat Office, Pollution Control Committee and the Accounts Section participated in the review. The Municipal Committee presented updates on progress under the mission, noting that ongoing measures are being supported by public mobilization drives under the Swachhta Hi Seva campaign launched earlier this month.
Waste generation patterns across the district came under scrutiny, with the committee observing low levels in winter due to harsh weather and a sharp rise during the tourist season in July and August. Discussions included the performance of the Solid Waste Management Plant at Skampari, operational since 2020, and the Legacy Waste Bio-remediation Project which has successfully reclaimed land by clearing thousands of tonnes of accumulated garbage.
The committee also examined the role of the Sewerage Treatment Plant at Agling and the Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant in Leh, both operational and contributing to improved sanitation. Upcoming projects to reinforce waste and wastewater management were outlined for future implementation.
Deputy Commissioner Donk urged strict adherence to deadlines, closer inter-departmental coordination and greater public participation. He commended the Municipal Committee and supporting agencies for their work so far but called for renewed commitment to meet the mission’s objectives. The meeting ended with a collective resolve to transform Leh into a model for sustainable and climate-resilient waste management in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
