Srinagar, July 17: In a determined move to enhance road safety across Jammu and Kashmir, the Transport Department has initiated a special enforcement drive targeting repeat violators of traffic rules. The decision follows a high-level meeting held on August 21, 2024, under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary of J&K and senior officials of the Transport Department.
The circular, issued on July 17, 2025, directs all Regional Transport Officers and Assistant Regional Transport Officers to intensify action against habitual and serial violators of the Motor Vehicle Act and its rules. The drive is to be carried out across the Union Territory, aiming to reduce road mishaps and penalize those who persistently flout traffic norms.
Prompting this crackdown is a strong message from the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, which recently raised concerns over the increasing number of road accidents and fatalities in Jammu and Kashmir. In its communication dated July 16, 2025, the Committee stressed the need for immediate action to safeguard public life.
The Transport Department has instructed field officers to not only implement the drive but also submit detailed reports of the actions taken within a week. These reports are to be shared with the Administrative Department to monitor progress.
The directive has been formally issued by Deputy Secretary Raman Sharma (JKAS), emphasizing accountability and swift execution. Copies of the circular have been forwarded to key transport officials across J&K, including the Transport Commissioner and regional officers in Kashmir, Kathua, and Jammu.
With road safety emerging as a pressing concern, this move signals a renewed administrative push to rein in reckless driving and enforce stricter compliance with traffic regulations throughout the Union Territory.
