PHONM PENH JAN 08 : Samdech Techo Hun Sen, president of Cambodia’s ruling Cambodian People’s Party and senate president, affirmed on Wednesday that the kingdom is committed to strictly and fully implementing the ceasefire agreement with Thailand to restore peace for both nations following weeks of armed conflict.
Hun Sen emphasized that restoring peace between Cambodia and Thailand will contribute significantly to broader peace, security, stability, and prosperity across the Southeast Asian region. His statement underscores the regional implications of the bilateral ceasefire that ended three weeks of hostilities.
The Cambodian leader expressed deep appreciation to the international community for their role in facilitating the peaceful resolution. “Cambodia expresses its deepest gratitude to all friendly countries and the international community, particularly the United States, the People’s Republic of China, and ASEAN member states under the coordination of Malaysia as the ASEAN Chair, for their active assistance and participation in seeking this peaceful solution,” Hun Sen stated.
His acknowledgment highlights the diplomatic efforts by major powers and regional organizations in brokering the ceasefire between the two Southeast Asian neighbors.
Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate ceasefire on December 27, 2025, bringing an end to three weeks of armed conflict that resulted in casualties on both sides. The armed confrontation raised concerns about regional stability and prompted urgent diplomatic interventions from ASEAN and major international players.
The ceasefire represents a crucial step toward de-escalating tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border, where territorial disputes have periodically flared into military confrontations. Hun Sen’s commitment to strict implementation signals Cambodia’s intent to honor the agreement and work toward lasting peace with its neighbor.
