The way electrons interact with photons of light is a vital part of many modern technologies, from lasers to solar panels to LEDs. But the interaction is inherently weak because of a major mismatch in scale: the wavelength of visible light is about 1,000 times larger than an electron, so the way the two things affect each other is limited by that disparity. Now, researchers at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), MIT and other universities say they have come up with an innovative way to make more robust interactions between photons and electrons possible, that produces a hundredfold increase…
As technologies keep advancing at exponential rates and demand for new devices rises accordingly, miniaturizing systems into chips has become increasingly important. Microelectronics has changed the way we manipulate electricity, enabling sophisticated electronic products that are now an essential part of our daily lives. Similarly, integrated photonics has been revolutionizing the way we control light for applications such as data communications, imaging, sensing, and biomedical devices. By routing and shaping light using micro- and nanoscale components, integrated photonics shrinks full optical systems into the size of tiny chips. Despite its success, integrated photonics has been missing a key component to…
Nuclear physicists have found a new way to use the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)—a particle collider at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory—to see the shape and details inside atomic nuclei. The method relies on particles of light that surround gold ions as they speed around the collider and a new type of quantum entanglement that’s never been seen before. Through a series of quantum fluctuations, the particles of light (a.k.a. photons) interact with gluons—gluelike particles that hold quarks together within the protons and neutrons of nuclei. Those interactions produce an intermediate particle that quickly decays…
Mumbai, Jan 4 (PTI) He may be one of the biggest stars of Indian cinema, but Shah Rukh Khan says he draws inspiration from regular people because it’s “special to be ordinary”. The 57-year-old superstar, who is awaiting the release of his much-awaited spy action film “Pathaan”, was interacting with his fans in his maiden #AskSrk session of 2023 on Twitter, which he wanted to be “fun”. “Have said this before I am inspired by regular people not achievers. Mumbai, Jan 4 (PTI) Superstar Hrithik Roshan has revealed that he was close to falling into “depression” after working hard on his physique for his 2019 action-thriller “War”. The 48-year-old actor, known for his fit physique, said during the making of the Siddharth Aanand-directed film he thought he went into “adrenaline fatigue”. “I feel as light and as fast as our last transformation. I thought I was dying when I was doing ‘War’. I wasn’t prepared for the film and I was up against a really big challenge. “I was trying to achieve perfection for which I wasn’t ready. After…
Bengaluru, Jan 5 (PTI) “Kantara” actor Kishore Kumar G has said Twitter suspended his account due to “hacking” and not because of his posts, and that the microblogging site has promised necessary action. The actor took to his unverified Instagram handle to clear “misconceptions” over why his Twitter page was suspended. “Account suspended. Twitter suspends accounts that violate the Twitter Rules,” is the message displayed if a user were to search for his handle ‘@actorkishore’. The 48-year-old also attached a screenshot of an email from Twitter confirming they had received his request to change his email ID.

New Delhi, Jan 5 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday underlined the importance of people’s participation in water conservation and said attempts by governments’ alone cannot be successful. “When the public is associated with a campaign, they also get to know the seriousness of the work. Due to this, a sense of ownership also comes in the public towards any scheme or campaign,” Modi said in his virtual address at the first national conference of water ministers from states in Bhopal. Water, he said, should be a subject of cooperation, collaboration and coordination among states and asked…

New Delhi, Jan 5 (PTI) Two leopard cubs were spotted in the Asola Bhatti Sanctuary recently in a fresh example of how bold efforts of conservationists and the forest and wildlife department can help several wildlife species recover in urban jungles. Forest department officials said the two cubs were caught on a camera trap a few days ago. A video shared by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) on its Instagram page showed a leopard cub emerging from a burrow inside the sanctuary. Since mother felines do not travel long distances with newborns, the officials believe the sanctuary is their birthplace.
