Kargil, Jul 18: In the shadow of the Jubar Ridge, where the echoes of 1999 still linger, the Indian Army held a Human Library event to revisit the stories etched into the landscape of the Kargil War. The gathering brought together veterans, serving soldiers, locals, and students in an open, emotional exchange of memories and lived experiences.

At the heart of the event were the voices of those who stood on the frontlines during the fierce Battle of Jubar Ridge. Colonel (then Captain) Ajay Rai, who led his men through unforgiving terrain under enemy fire, shared a moving account of the night his unit fought to reclaim the ridge. His memories drew quiet attention from a packed audience, many of whom were hearing such raw testimony for the first time.

Joining him were fellow veterans who offered their recollections of the uphill battle, the brutal cold, and the loss and resilience that defined the operation. Their words turned the gathering into a space of remembrance, learning, and quiet reflection.

The Indian Army extended its tribute beyond the battlefield, honouring local porters whose support proved indispensable during the war. Navigating treacherous paths with supplies on their backs, these civilians became lifelines for the troops at the front.

In addition to the storytelling sessions, the Army organized a free medical camp as part of its broader outreach to the local community. Young students from nearby villages participated with keen interest, engaging with veterans and gaining insight into a chapter of history that shaped the region’s identity.

Among the attendees was Councillor Feroz Khan of the Silmoo Constituency, who addressed the gathering as Chief Guest. He praised the Army’s efforts to bridge generations and bring remote border communities into conversations that resonate across the nation.

Personnel from the 192 Brigade were present throughout the event, interacting with residents and reinforcing the enduring relationship between the Armed Forces and the people of Batalik.

As the sun dipped behind the ridges that once saw battle, the Human Library closed not with applause, but with quiet conversation and reflective silence. The event, more than a commemoration, became a living link to the past, reminding all who attended that stories of courage are best remembered when told by those who lived them.
