Brig Joshi and Councillor Wahid applaud local talent

Kaksar, Jun 18: The 21st Capt. Saurabh Kalia Cup concluded with an electric atmosphere at the cricket ground named after the late martyr, drawing crowds from across the Kargil district to the border village of Kaksar. The much-awaited final saw a thrilling contest between Friends Drass and Skarchen Latoo, with the latter emerging victorious in a close chase.

Batting first, Friends Drass posted a competitive score of 166. Skarchen Latoo responded with grit and determination, reaching 167 and sealing the match in a gripping finish. The final was attended by senior Army officers, local leaders, and cheering fans, underscoring the growing popularity of the tournament in the region.

Brigadier Ashish Joshi, Commander of the Kargil Sentinels Brigade, felicitated the winners, runners-up, and outstanding performers with trophies and cash prizes. The celebration wasn’t limited to men’s cricket; the Women’s Cricket Winner Team of GHS Kaksar and the Runner-Up Team from Council Model High School Goma Kargil were also honoured for their spirited performances. Individual achievements were applauded, promoting an atmosphere of encouragement and equality in sports.

Councillor Abdul Wahid praised the enthusiasm of the young athletes and announced a ₹10,000 cash prize for the victorious women’s team. He also reiterated his commitment to supporting local sports and preserving Ladakh’s cultural roots, applauding the Indian Army’s ongoing efforts to uplift youth through athletics.

The tournament brought together 42 teams from across the Kargil district, transforming the event into one of Ladakh’s most cherished annual sporting celebrations. Attendees included social activist Sajjad Kargili, Councillor Altaf Hussain, and respected educators and citizens of the Shingo Zone, all of whom added to the festive atmosphere.

Reflecting on the journey of the tournament, Sajjad Kargili shared its emotional origins—conceived by the youth of Kaksar to honour the sacrifice of Captain Saurabh Kalia. Over the years, it has grown into a heartfelt tribute and a unifying force in the community, showcasing the enduring bond between the people of Kargil and the Indian Army.

As the crowd dispersed with smiles and memories, the spirit of sportsmanship and remembrance lingered, echoing in the valleys of Ladakh until next year’s return.
