Kargil, Mar 14: Suhail Khan, an M.Sc. student from the Department of Disaster Management at the Kargil Campus of the University of Ladakh, has secured top honours at the national-level GeoSpace TechFest 2026, organised by AantriX — The Geospatial Society of Delhi Technological University (DTU).
Competing against participants from universities across the country, Khan emerged as the winner of the National Geospace Hackathon, leading “Team GeoCoders” to the first position with an innovative geospatial solution.
The team developed “Rain Correct,” a satellite precipitation bias correction system designed for Kerala’s 14 districts. The project employed terrain-aware machine learning techniques to analyse precipitation patterns using data from the 2024 Wayanad landslide event. According to the organisers, the team successfully built and deployed a fully functional application within a 48-hour development sprint.
In addition to the hackathon victory, Khan also secured second place in the National Geospace Quiz, an individual competition testing participants’ knowledge in Earth observation, satellite technology and geospatial science.
The achievement has drawn appreciation from the academic community at the University of Ladakh. In a statement, the university credited the accomplishment to the support and guidance provided by faculty members of the Department of Disaster Management.
The statement also acknowledged the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Saket Kushwaha, noting that the university’s emphasis on strengthening academic research and innovation continues to enable students to compete effectively at national platforms.
Faculty members of the department congratulated Khan for bringing recognition to the university through his performance at the national technology festival, describing the achievement as a reflection of the growing research culture and technical engagement among students at the Kargil campus.
