Turtuk, Aug 18: Community leaders from Turtuk have lodged a strong protest with the Taxi Union, Leh, over alleged defamatory remarks made by a taxi driver that have gone viral on social media.
In a letter addressed to the President of the Taxi Union, Leh, the villagers expressed deep concern over a WhatsApp voice note, allegedly recorded by a taxi driver affiliated with the union, in which derogatory and misleading comments about Turtuk were made.
According to the letter, the remarks have hurt the sentiments of the local people and tarnished the village’s reputation. Turtuk, located in Nubra valley, is renowned for its hospitality, rich culture, and serene environment.
The letter, signed by village representatives Anayat Ullah, Lambardar Turtuk Youl, and Karim Bagdor, Lambardar Turtuk Farooq, emphasized that such “irresponsible actions” not only defame the community but also risk creating misunderstandings among tourists and visitors.
The signatories urged the Taxi Union to investigate the matter at the earliest, identify the driver responsible, and ensure that he issues a public apology to restore the dignity and goodwill of Turtuk.
“We believe the Taxi Union, under your leadership, will treat this issue with the seriousness it deserves and take appropriate action,” they said.
The community’s appeal highlights growing concern over the spread of misinformation through social media and its impact on tourism-dependent regions like Turtuk.
