Washington, Jul 02: In a bold move that could reshape U.S. foreign trade policy and global alliances, President Donald Trump has officially backed a Senate bill proposing a sweeping 500% tariff on countries that maintain strong economic ties with Russia.
The legislation, known as the Sanctioning Russia Act, is designed to economically isolate Moscow by penalizing third-party nations—most notably India and China—that continue to import large volumes of Russian oil despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who introduced the bill earlier this year, confirmed the President’s support during an interview on ABC News.
“If you’re buying products from Russia and you’re not helping Ukraine, then there’s a 500 percent tariff on your products coming into the United States,” Graham stated. “India and China buy 70% of Putin’s oil. They keep his war machine going.”
The proposed tariffs would significantly impact India and China, the two largest buyers of Russian crude oil, and could trigger serious economic and diplomatic consequences.
President Trump’s endorsement of the bill underscores a dramatic escalation in efforts to pressure not just Russia, but also its key economic supporters. If enacted, the measure would mark a significant shift in U.S. strategy—linking market access to a country’s alignment with Washington’s stance on the Ukraine conflict.
The bill is expected to gain traction among Congressional Republicans, with growing speculation that it could become a cornerstone of the Trump administration’s broader foreign policy agenda in the months ahead.
As the global community watches closely, the Sanctioning Russia Act sends a powerful message that continuing trade with Moscow may come at a steep price in Trump’s America.
