LEH: A district-wide mobilisation involving local communities, grassroots institutions and youth groups marked the successful conduct of the Swachh Gaon Surakshit Jalvayu Campaign across various blocks of Leh district, with a series of awareness programmes, plantation drives and cleanliness activities aimed at advancing environmental conservation and climate resilience.
Organised under the Solid Waste Management Campaign, the initiative focused on the theme, “Together for a cleaner environment, sustainable future, and climate-resilient villages.” The campaign sought to further the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) 2.0 and Mission LiFE by encouraging responsible waste management, water conservation, reduction in single-use plastics, adoption of kitchen gardens and healthier lifestyle practices.
Officials said the campaign was designed to sensitise residents about environmental stewardship and the proper operation and maintenance of community Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) assets. To achieve this, a range of public outreach activities was conducted, including awareness rallies, community dialogues, morning marches, painting and drawing competitions, information and education campaigns, and cleanliness awareness programmes.
Plantation and sanitation drives were organised across participating villages, drawing enthusiastic involvement from Panchayati Raj Institution members, Village Water and Sanitation Committee representatives, Self-Help Groups, Swachhagrahis, community-based organisations and non-governmental organisations.
The campaign also witnessed participation from retired Armed Forces and paramilitary personnel, senior citizens, NSS, NYKS and NCC volunteers, schoolchildren and local residents, reflecting a collective commitment towards environmental responsibility.
The coordinated effort reinforced the message of sustainable living and community-led action, contributing to ongoing efforts to build cleaner villages and climate-resilient communities across Leh district.
