New Delhi, Feb 26: The Supreme Court has ordered the Centre, Delhi government, and states to join a key meeting on March 14 to build a centralized dashboard and standardize CCTV setups across police stations, frustrated by last-minute no-shows.
Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta acted after amicus curiae Siddhartha Dave reported poor attendance at a February 21 huddle—despite a January 29 directive—blocking progress on the suo motu PIL sparked by media reports on faulty CCTVs. The Union cited a “communication gap” but pledged full cooperation next time; hearing fixed for March 23.
This builds on 2018 orders mandating cameras in stations to curb rights abuses, plus 2020 rules for agencies like CBI/ED/NIA. Coverage must span entries, lock-ups, corridors—even outside cells—with night vision, audio-video, and 1-year storage, leaving no blind spots.
