Poonch, Feb 26: After weeks of closure due to heavy snowfall across the Pir Panjal range, District Magistrate Poonch has approved limited reopening of the strategic Mughal Road (NH-701A) stretch from Bufliaz to Peer Ki Gali for light motor vehicles (LMVs) starting tomorrow, February 27.
Travel will be permitted only between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM daily, strictly subject to favorable weather and no unforeseen risks like avalanches or fresh snow. The decision follows successful snow clearance by the 79 RCC (GREF) unit and their safety recommendation, marking a rare February resumption for this vital 84-km alternate route linking Poonch-Rajouri in Jammu division to south Kashmir’s Shopian.
To ensure commuter safety, authorities must station personnel and heavy machinery at vulnerable, avalanche-prone spots along the high-altitude pass (elevations up to 11,000+ ft). Police will manage traffic regulation at critical checkpoints, enforcing strict timing to prevent congestion or mishaps.
Residents and travelers—especially students, traders, and those accessing essential services—gained much-needed relief, as the Jammu-Srinagar highway often faces disruptions. Commuters are urged to monitor daily traffic advisories from traffic police, check road status via helplines, and equip vehicles with chains, winter gear, and emergency kits. One-way or full restrictions could snap back with weather changes.
This phased reopening underscores ongoing BRO/GREF efforts amid a harsh winter, boosting connectivity, local trade (fruits, essentials), and emergency access while prioritizing safety in the rugged terrain. Full heavy vehicle (HMV) access may follow later assessments.
