Reasi, July 9: Multiple spillway gates of the Salal Dam in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district were opened on Thursday following a significant rise in water inflow due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
Officials said the gates were opened to regulate the increasing water level in the reservoir and ensure the safe release of excess water into the Chenab River.
The surge in inflow was attributed to continuous rainfall in the dam’s catchment areas over the past few days, which led to a rise in the reservoir level.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents living along the Chenab River banks to remain cautious and avoid approaching the river as water discharge is likely to increase.
Officials said opening the spillway gates is part of routine reservoir management measures aimed at maintaining the safety and stability of the dam during periods of heavy inflow.
