New Delhi, May 12 :  Amid rising cases of cyber fraud involving impersonation of government officials, authorities have introduced a QR code-based verification system for enumerators and supervisors visiting households for Census 2027 in the capital.

The move aims to ensure a secure and efficient door-to-door enumeration process in Municipal Corporation of Delhi areas, scheduled to begin on May 16.

Officials from the Office of the Registrar General and Census told PTI that all enumerators and supervisors deployed for the exercise will carry appointment letters and identity cards issued by charge officers. Both documents will include embedded QR codes that residents can scan to verify authenticity.

“If there is any doubt or suspicion, household members can verify the visiting personnel by checking their documents and scanning the QR code to confirm authenticity,” officials said.

The safeguard comes in the wake of multiple cyber fraud cases across the country, where fraudsters have impersonated officials using fake documents and digital manipulation, including so-called “digital arrest” scams.

Officials said such incidents and fake census-related messages circulating online have raised concerns over impersonation-based fraud.

They also noted that under the ongoing self-enumeration process, 93,521 entries were recorded on Monday, including 77,372 completed and 16,149 initiated cases, with an overall completion rate of 82.73 per cent. Most entries were reported from North East, South West, and North West Delhi.

During the House Listing Operations, enumerators will verify self-enumeration IDs provided by households and match them with mapped data. In cases where mismatches occur, fresh data will be collected.

To enhance supervision, one supervisor will monitor every six HLBs (House Listing Blocks).

Officials said the QR-based system is designed to strengthen transparency, reduce fraud risks, and improve public trust in the census process.
