Urges Probe into Firing Incident; Justice for Victims and Support for injured

Leh, Sept. 26: Former Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal has written to Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta, expressing deep sorrow and grave concern over the violent incident that shook Leh on September 24, leaving four young lives lost, several injured, and widespread damage to property.

In his letter, Namgyal described the tragedy as a painful breach of democratic expression that spiraled into violence, causing immense anguish across Ladakh. He noted that while violence and arson must be condemned, the firing on unarmed protestors has deeply shaken public trust. “Ladakh’s people are united in their call for peace, justice, and accountability,” he observed, while appreciating the appeals for calm issued by the Leh Apex Body, the Kargil Democratic Alliance, and the intervention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah ahead of the scheduled High Power Committee meeting on October 6.

Calling the grief of bereaved families “immeasurable,” the former MP urged the administration to ensure justice for innocent lives lost and relief for the injured. He pressed for an impartial and time-bound judicial inquiry, immediate ex-gratia relief to affected families, and free medical care for the injured, including transfer to premier hospitals outside Ladakh if required. He further emphasized the need for counselling and psycho-social support to traumatised families and students, alongside educational and livelihood assistance for households that lost their breadwinners.

Namgyal also underlined the importance of initiating a credible dialogue process with all stakeholders to restore trust and prevent recurrence of such tragedies. “Ladakh stands at a fragile juncture. The sacrifices of our young men must not go in vain. Our people, who shoulder immense responsibility as guardians of this frontier, deserve governance that is both firm and humane—delivering justice with compassion and addressing grievances with honesty,” the letter stated.

Extending his deepest condolences, Namgyal assured his readiness to assist in any constructive role for peace and reconciliation in the region.
