Kargil, Mar 25: Emphasising the need to position Kargil’s rich cultural heritage and indigenous products at the forefront, Deputy Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, LAHDC Kargil, Rakesh Kumar on Tuesday called for a focused and coordinated effort to ensure that the Apricot Blossom Festival 2026 reflects the region’s identity in both spirit and execution.
Chairing a review meeting to finalise preparations for the upcoming festival, the Deputy Commissioner directed all departments to prioritise the promotion of local products, including apricot-based items, traditional embroidery, and handicrafts. He observed that the festival should serve as a platform to present the district’s unique cultural and economic strengths to a wider audience.
The meeting witnessed detailed discussions on organisational aspects, with particular attention to planning, execution timelines, and inter-departmental coordination. Rakesh Kumar stressed that all arrangements must be carried out in a systematic manner, ensuring that each department adheres to assigned responsibilities without delay.
To enhance the cultural dimension of the event, the administration plans to set up cuisine-based food stalls featuring a variety of local dishes. The initiative is aimed at offering visitors an immersive experience of Kargil’s culinary traditions while also supporting local vendors.
In line with efforts to broaden the tourism appeal, the Assistant Director Tourism proposed the inclusion of cycling activities at Karkitchu and other scenic locations. The proposal was discussed as a means to allow visitors to engage more closely with the natural landscape while adding a recreational component to the festival.
The review also covered infrastructure readiness, publicity measures, cultural programming, and essential services such as healthcare facilities. Officers were instructed to ensure proper sanitation, maintain public convenience, and manage the anticipated tourist inflow efficiently.
The Deputy Commissioner reiterated the importance of seamless coordination among departments, cautioning against any lapses that could affect the overall conduct of the festival. He noted that the event should be organised in a manner that not only attracts visitors from across the country but also presents Kargil as a culturally vibrant and well-managed destination.
Senior officials, including the Superintendent of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Chief Medical Officer, Divisional Forest Officer, Executive Engineers, and other district officers, attended the meeting and reviewed progress on their respective assignments.
The Apricot Blossom Festival marks the seasonal bloom of apricot orchards across Kargil and remains a central feature of the district’s tourism calendar. This year, the administration is working towards enhancing its outreach while ensuring that the cultural essence of the region remains central to the celebrations.
