KARGIL: In preparation for the forthcoming Muharram observances, the Municipal Committee Kargil on Monday carried out a major roadside clearance drive along the Circular Old Hospital Road, aimed at improving traffic movement and addressing parking constraints in the town.
The operation covered the stretch from the Bus Stand to Upper Changchik and was undertaken under the supervision of Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Kargil, Ayas Ahmad (JKAS), in coordination with Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Kargil, Ghulam Mohammad (JKAS).
Officials said accumulated debris and roadside obstructions were removed to facilitate road widening and improve vehicular accessibility along the route. The drive involved the deployment of 15 labourers, two JCB excavators and two dumpers.
According to the administration, the initiative has been taken in response to the limited parking availability in the Main Bazaar area and the expected rise in vehicular movement during Muharram.
The widened Circular Road is expected to serve as an alternative traffic corridor, helping ease congestion in the town centre and ensuring smoother movement of vehicles during the religious observances.
Speaking on the occasion, the ADDC said the administration is undertaking a series of measures to strengthen urban infrastructure and improve public convenience ahead of Muharram. He added that similar clearance and road improvement works would be carried out at other identified locations across Kargil.
Officials expressed hope that the intervention would contribute to better traffic regulation, enhanced road safety and improved accessibility for residents and visitors during major religious and public events.
