Washington, October 14: American singer Mary Millben has alleged that the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) is receiving financial support from donors in the United States who oppose Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging young Indians to peacefully counter what she described as the party’s “disruptive” activities.
Millben’s remarks come amid protests in New Delhi by CJP members and opposition supporters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In a social media post, Millben alleged that CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and his party were being funded by US-based donors opposed to Modi and his leadership. She did not provide evidence to substantiate the funding allegation in the statement cited.
Calling on young Indians to speak out, the singer urged them to organise peacefully and stand up against what she described as forces seeking to disrupt India’s political and development trajectory.
Millben further alleged that certain donors followed a pattern of supporting individuals educated in the United States who later returned to their home countries to mobilise movements against conservative political leaders. She claimed such efforts had created instability in several countries.
The singer said democratic values and freedom should be protected through peaceful counter-movements, calling for a new generation of Indian voices to emerge from within the country.
Millben also expressed confidence in Prime Minister Modi, saying he would not yield to what she characterised as disruptive external influences.
A prominent African-American singer and performer, Millben is known in India for her renditions of the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana, and the devotional song Om Jai Jagdish Hare.
She performed India’s national anthem at an event in the United States in 2023 during Prime Minister Modi’s visit.
