Srinagar, October 15: Ladakh’s renowned Pashmina and traditional handicrafts are attracting attention at Lakmé Fashion Week, being held at The Taj in New Delhi from October 13 to 18, with a dedicated stall showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage and centuries-old craftsmanship.
The stall features Ladakh’s world-famous Pashmina shawls, handwoven textiles, intricate embroidery and indigenous handicrafts, highlighting the exceptional skills of local artisans and weavers.
At the heart of Ladakh’s Pashmina tradition is the Changthang community, whose pastoral livelihood is closely linked to the high-altitude Changra goats that produce the fine Pashmina fibre. Despite the harsh climatic conditions of the Changthang plateau, local herders have preserved this unique tradition across generations, making Pashmina an integral part of Ladakh’s cultural identity.
Officials said the exhibition showcases the journey of Pashmina from the high-altitude pastures of Changthang to finely crafted products that blend traditional techniques with contemporary designs. The display also highlights the contribution of spinners, weavers, craftspeople and women entrepreneurs in sustaining the region’s handicraft sector.
A major highlight is scheduled for Sunday, when designers from Ladakh will present their collections on the fashion runway. The showcase will feature Pashmina creations, traditional embroidery and modern interpretations of indigenous Ladakhi textiles, bringing the region’s distinctive craftsmanship to a wider national audience.
The participation also aims to recognise the communities behind these products, including Changthang herders, local artisans and women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs), whose work helps preserve Ladakh’s traditional skills and cultural heritage.
By connecting local producers with the wider fashion industry, the initiative seeks to create new market opportunities, strengthen local enterprises and promote sustainable livelihoods for artisans and craftspeople.
The initiative is part of broader efforts by the Union Territory Administration and the Department of Industries and Commerce to strengthen Ladakh’s handicrafts and handloom sector under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) scheme. The programme aims to support artisans and SHGs, improve traditional skills and increase the market visibility of locally produced goods.
From the rugged pastures of Changthang to the fashion runway in New Delhi, Ladakh’s Pashmina represents the region’s unique landscape, cultural legacy and the dedication of its people. The showcase provides an opportunity to promote this heritage while opening new avenues for growth and recognition for local artisans and entrepreneurs.
