KARGIL : A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders led by former Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson, on Sunday visited the Zojila Tunnel project site and reviewed the progress of the strategically important infrastructure project, describing it as a transformative initiative for Ladakh’s connectivity and economic development.
The visit comes ahead of a crucial milestone in the execution of the project, with tunnel officials informing the delegation that the much-anticipated breakthrough is expected on June 9. According to the delegation, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, is likely to attend the occasion.
Speaking after the inspection, Adv. Tashi Gyalson said the project represents a major step towards ensuring all-weather connectivity between Ladakh and the rest of the country. The delegation was briefed by project officials on the status of ongoing works and was taken inside the tunnel to witness construction activities firsthand. Members reviewed various components of the project and discussed the progress achieved so far.
Gyalson stated that the Zojila Tunnel, being constructed at an estimated cost of over ₹8,000 crore, reflects the Centre’s emphasis on strengthening infrastructure in border and high-altitude regions. He credited the project to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said Ladakh had witnessed accelerated infrastructure development over the past decade.
The former CEC also expressed gratitude to the Government of India for prioritising infrastructure projects in the region and acknowledged the contribution of engineers, officials, workers and labourers associated with the execution of the tunnel.
The delegation included BJP State President Tashi Gyaltsan Khachu, General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul, MLA Dr. D.K.
