Kargil, Feb 10: The Traffic Police Kargil on Tuesday launched a three-day public awareness drive in Kargil to educate commuters on seatbelt use and compliance with traffic regulations.
The campaign is being conducted at Ringmos Pyang, the TV Station area and the Bypass at Shilikchey, where traffic personnel are interacting with drivers and passengers and explaining road safety practices and legal provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act.
DySP Traffic Sonam Angchuk said that despite a month-long National Road Safety campaign organised earlier by the district administration, the Assistant Regional Transport Office and the traffic police, routine violations continue to be reported across the town.
He said the most common breaches include failure to wear seatbelts, use of mobile phones while driving and the unnecessary use of high-beam headlights in busy and congested stretches.
Emphasising the local road conditions, the officer said that seatbelt use is particularly vital in hilly terrain such as Kargil, where sharp curves, narrow roads and unpredictable surfaces raise the risk of serious injuries during accidents.
He further informed that once the three-day awareness programme concludes, enforcement measures will be intensified and violators will be challaned strictly under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The Traffic Police have appealed to the public to cooperate with enforcement teams and follow traffic rules in the interest of safer roads for all commuters.
