KHALTSE: The District Highway Safety Task Force Committee, Sham, carried out a joint inspection of the National Highway-1 corridor between Likir and Bodh Kharboo to assess road safety conditions and review measures aimed at ensuring safer travel along the strategically important route.
The survey, conducted on June 9, focused on locations identified in observations related to highway safety and sought to evaluate the preparedness of departments responsible for maintaining road infrastructure and commuter safety.
Officials inspected vulnerable stretches of the highway, traffic management systems, road signage, crash barriers and ongoing maintenance works. The exercise was aimed at identifying deficiencies, assessing existing safety infrastructure and facilitating coordinated action among stakeholder departments.
During the inspection, the committee examined critical road sections susceptible to accidents and discussed interventions required to reduce risks for motorists. Particular attention was paid to the condition of safety installations and the need for timely repair and maintenance of infrastructure along the highway.
Officials also reviewed traffic management arrangements and emergency response preparedness, emphasising the importance of inter-departmental coordination to ensure swift action during road-related emergencies.
The inspection forms part of continuing efforts by the district administration and allied agencies to strengthen highway safety standards on NH-1, which serves as a crucial transport link in Ladakh. Authorities noted observations at various locations and are expected to formulate follow-up measures to address identified concerns.
The committee underscored the need for sustained monitoring, regular maintenance and improved safety infrastructure to enhance commuter confidence and facilitate smooth vehicular movement along the corridor, particularly during periods of heavy traffic and challenging weather conditions.
