KARGIL: Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Kargil, Ghulam Mohad, chaired a review and planning meeting of the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) on Wednesday, stressing the need to strengthen rural enterprises through better utilisation of local resources, particularly wool, and enhanced market access for community-based products.
The meeting, attended by District Programme Managers and Block Programme Managers, assessed the progress of ongoing NRLM activities and deliberated on strategies to expand livelihood opportunities across rural areas of the district.
Reviewing implementation at the grassroots level, the ADDC discussed challenges faced by field functionaries and emphasised improved coordination, capacity building and community participation to enhance programme outcomes.
A major focus of the meeting was the promotion of local wool resources. Mohad advocated the adoption of modern and larger processing machinery, wherever feasible, to improve productivity and product quality. He said local wool-based products should be positioned competitively in broader markets through stronger branding and marketing initiatives to secure better returns for Self Help Groups (SHGs) and rural producers.
Officials informed the meeting that under the “One Product One Block” initiative, each block had identified a distinct product based on local resources and economic potential. Discussions also covered the promotion of homestays and tourism-linked opportunities, including the economic potential associated with sites such as the Karpokhar Museum.
The ADDC encouraged officials to foster entrepreneurship and self-reliance among NRLM members, urging communities to develop innovative livelihood models centred on local resources and sustainable economic activities.
He directed concerned officers to formulate effective action plans for achieving programme objectives and expanding income-generation opportunities. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening NRLM interventions and enhancing socio-economic empowerment across rural Kargil.
