Srinagar, June 25: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Thursday reopened the Gulmarg Cable Car project, popularly known as the Gondola, for tourists after a month-long suspension due to a technical issue.
An official of the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation said the services resumed after completion of necessary repairs and maintenance work. He added that multiple tests were conducted over the past few days to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the cable car system.
Tourists can now book Gondola rides through the corporation’s official online portal, the official said.
The service was suspended on May 25 after a technical snag left more than 300 tourists and local guides stranded mid-air, following which the Army, police, NDRF and SDRF launched a rescue operation.
Following the incident, the Jammu and Kashmir Government constituted a five-member committee on June 10 to examine the cause of the malfunction and submit its report within 10 days.
The reopening of the Gondola is expected to provide a boost to tourism activities in Gulmarg, one of Kashmir’s most popular destinations.
