Kargil, Aug 28: In a bid to combine classroom learning with real-world experience, students of the High Altitude Adventure Guide course at Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil, Sankoo Campus, successfully undertook a one-day educational hike to Lago Laa on Sunday.
The expedition, led by instructor Shabir Ali, was more than just a trek. It served as a field-based training session where students honed critical hiking skills including route navigation, pacing, hydration management, and mountain safety protocols.
Equipped with trekking poles, layered clothing, sturdy footwear, and first-aid kits, the students were also introduced to the significance of carrying proper gear during high-altitude expeditions.
A central highlight of the hike was the emphasis on the internationally recognized “Leave No Trace” principle. Participants practiced responsible trekking by managing waste meticulously, respecting fragile alpine ecosystems, and ensuring minimal human impact on the natural surroundings.
Speaking about the initiative, a faculty member noted that the exercise was designed not only to test students’ endurance but also to nurture values of leadership and environmental stewardship—qualities essential for their future careers as professional adventure guides.
The college administration lauded the efforts of both the instructor and the students, terming the hike a “model of experiential learning” that successfully merged adventure, education, and sustainability.
