



Leh, Sept 18: A group of farmers from Kargil accompanied by Class 12 students of Delhi Public School gained first-hand exposure to modern farming techniques during their visit to the School of Agricultural Science and Technology (SAS&T), Stakna, University of Ladakh on September 17. The educational tour was organized by the Department of Horticulture, Kargil.
The visitors were introduced to protected cultivation methods at the Precision Farming Development Centre, where experts demonstrated crop production of tomato, muskmelon, watermelon and cucumber under low tunnels, walk-in tunnels and trench systems. The demonstrations highlighted scientific methods suited to the Trans-Himalayan environment.
The itinerary also included a visit to the Trans-Himalayan Arboretum, where indigenous tree species, medicinal herbs and aromatic plants are preserved for research and conservation. Students were given a special orientation session detailing the University’s undergraduate programmes in Agriculture and Horticulture. Guidance was also offered on entrepreneurship opportunities in the farming sector.
Interactive discussions, led by Dr. Sonam Spaldon, Dr. Kunzang Lamo and Dr. Thanlas Norboo, underscored the potential of advanced agricultural practices in shaping future livelihoods. Faculty members encouraged the students to consider innovative career paths in agriculture while urging farmers to adopt modern techniques to enhance productivity.
The exposure trip was aimed at bridging traditional practices with contemporary agricultural innovations, offering both farmers and students a platform to learn and explore future possibilities in the sector.
