Leh, Mar 31: Against the backdrop of mounting environmental pressures in Ladakh — marked by visible glacier retreat, erratic weather patterns and increasing strain on biodiversity — a community-led bike rally on Sunday sought to draw public attention to the region’s fragile ecological balance and the urgency of sustainable action.
The “Eco Moto Rally Ladakh 2026,” organised by Drukling Tsogspa with support from NHPC Limited’s Nimoo Bazgo Power Station, brought together a large number of residents, particularly youth, to engage in a coordinated awareness effort centred on climate change and environmental protection.
Flagging off the rally at Alchi, Project Head Sanjai Kumar Rai emphasised the need for collective responsibility in confronting ecological challenges and advancing sustainable practices in Ladakh. Participants rode from the power station to Leh, traversing key stretches to maximise outreach and visibility of the campaign.
Organisers said the initiative was conceived as a response to the growing environmental vulnerabilities in the high-altitude region. With glaciers receding at an accelerated pace and weather cycles becoming increasingly unpredictable, local communities are facing direct and indirect impacts on water availability, agriculture and livelihoods. The rally, they added, aimed to foster awareness and encourage behavioural shifts towards reduced carbon emissions.
Participants carried banners bearing environmental messages and interacted with residents along the route, advocating eco-conscious practices and sustainable living. The programme also included pledge-taking ceremonies and dissemination of informational material to reinforce the campaign’s objectives.
The organisers maintained that such community-driven interventions are essential in ecologically sensitive regions like Ladakh, where the effects of climate change are becoming more pronounced. They underlined the importance of sustained public engagement to build resilience and safeguard the region’s natural heritage.
The rally concluded in Leh with participants reiterating the need for continued awareness initiatives and collaborative efforts to address environmental challenges confronting Ladakh.
