Kargil, Apr 17: The 135th birth anniversary of B. R. Ambedkar was observed in Zanskar with a strong emphasis on education, social equality and civic responsibility, drawing participation from students, local residents and community leaders at Duzin Photang School on April 14.
Organised jointly by Choskul Tsogpa Zanskar in collaboration with the Zanskar Buddhist Association and its Youth Wing, the programme featured speeches and cultural performances reflecting Ambedkar’s life and enduring influence on Indian society.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Zanskar, who attended as Chief Guest, alongside the Zonal Education Officer as Guest of Honour, underscored Ambedkar’s role in shaping modern India through his advocacy of education and social justice. Addressing the gathering, they urged students to remain committed to academic pursuits and contribute constructively to national development.
A large number of villagers from adjoining areas and students from multiple schools across Zanskar attended the event, lending it a broad community character. Cultural skits staged by students depicted key moments from Ambedkar’s life, reinforcing his message of equality and constitutional values.
Speakers from the organising bodies, including Gyan Mingur Dorjay and Tsering Dorjay, highlighted Ambedkar’s intellectual legacy and called upon the younger generation to adopt discipline, knowledge and social awareness as guiding principles.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Stanzin Rangdol, who acknowledged the contributions of guests, educators, students and local residents in ensuring the smooth conduct of the event.
The commemoration in Zanskar reflected a continuing engagement with Ambedkar’s ideals, particularly among youth, as educational institutions and community organisations used the occasion to reiterate the relevance of his vision in contemporary society.
