Leh, Jan 18:  Amid growing urban traffic woes in Leh city, the District Administration Leh on Saturday held a review meeting to assess traffic management challenges in the town’s municipal and urban areas. The meeting was convened as part of the ongoing month-long Road Safety Programme and was chaired by Sonam Norbu, JKAS, Additional District Development Commissioner and Administrator, Municipality Leh, at the VC Room of the DC Office, Leh.

The meeting focused on strengthening parking management and traffic regulation within the urban limits of Leh. Detailed discussions were held on the proposal to introduce new paid parking facilities to address congestion in busy commercial and residential areas. The Traffic Police and the Municipal Committee, Leh were directed to work jointly to identify and prepare a list of potential locations suitable for paid parking.

Officials also reviewed issues related to the allotment of parking spaces, issuance of traffic challans, and the regulation of floating traffic zones, which often disrupt smooth vehicular movement. Emphasis was laid on improving the regulation of bus movement in urban areas through proper route planning, identification and implementation of designated bus stops, and tighter enforcement of traffic norms.

The role of recovery trucks in easing congestion, particularly during peak traffic hours, came up for discussion, along with the need to regulate the movement of old vehicles within town limits. The meeting further deliberated on identifying suitable routes for e-buses and addressing parking as well as operational challenges linked to their functioning in Leh city.

The meeting was attended by Kunzes Dolma, DSP Traffic; Manager Transport, SIDCO Leh; Manzoor, SHO Leh; Executive Officer of Municipal Committee Leh, and other concerned officials. The administration stressed coordinated action among all stakeholder departments to improve traffic flow and road safety in Leh’s urban areas.
