Leh, Jan 18: Preparations for the 16th National Voters’ Day (NVD), 2026 gathered pace in Leh on Saturday as a coordination meeting was held to finalize arrangements for the district-level celebrations. The meeting was chaired by Ghulam Mohd, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Leh, at the Mini Conference Hall of the DC Office.

National Voters’ Day is observed every year on January 25 to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India and to promote informed and active participation in the electoral process. In line with this objective, the Leh district administration has planned a series of activities aimed at increasing voter awareness, with a special focus on newly enrolled and first-time voters.

During the meeting, it was decided that programmes would be organised at polling stations across the district. Newly registered voters will be felicitated through the distribution of Elector Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) and badges. The Voters’ Pledge will be administered at these events, highlighting the importance of ethical and responsible voting. Officials were also asked to address pending issues related to voter enrolment during these interactions.

Awareness camps and small public functions will be conducted at the sub-divisional level in the presence of Nambardars and local representatives to ensure community participation. To involve young citizens, NCC cadets will actively take part in the programmes. The National Voters’ Day 2026 theme, “My India, My Vote”, will be promoted through focused outreach activities.

To reach a wider audience, banners and voter awareness material will be displayed at venues of the Khelo India Winter Games, where large public footfall is expected. The administration also decided to involve public icons to further spread awareness about voter registration and participation.

As January 25 falls on a Sunday this year, it was resolved that the Voters’ Pledge will be taken at all district, block, sub-divisional and panchayat levels on January 24, 2026. Pledge material will be distributed a day earlier, on January 23, to ensure smooth conduct of the programme.

The main district-level function will be organised at DIHAR Leh, where stalls set up by different departments will be inaugurated online by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. Officers, including ALOs, BLOs, EROs, AEROs and BLAs, were directed to work in coordination to ensure maximum voter enrolment and public participation.

The meeting was attended by the Assistant Director Tourism, Assistant Superintendent of Police Leh, Zonal Education Officer Leh, and other concerned officers, both in person and through virtual mode.
