Leh, Jan 30: As part of pan-India rescue and rehabilitation campaign aimed at eliminating child and adolescent labour an inspection drive was carried out in Leh on Thursday by the District Child Protection Unit through the District Task Force.
The joint inspection was undertaken by a multi-departmental team that included officials from the Assistant Labour Commissioner’s office, the Chief Medical Officer, the Chief Education Officer, the Child Development Project Officer, the Special Juvenile Police Unit, Leh, and Open Shelter services.
The inspection drive focused on the main commercial stretch of Leh, beginning from Skampari Market and extending up to Manekhang Bazaar. Shops, restaurants, roadside eateries, and small business units were checked to ensure that no child or adolescent below the age of 18 was engaged in any form of labour.
Officials conducted on-site verification of age documents, assessed working conditions, and reviewed compliance records. The exercise was carried out strictly under the provisions of the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, as amended in 2016, along with the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
During the drive, the district administration issued clear instructions to employers, warning that any engagement of child or adolescent labour would lead to strict legal action under existing laws.
The District Child Protection Unit, Leh, stated that similar inspection and enforcement drives will continue across the district throughout the year. Identified hotspot areas will remain under regular watch to ensure the safety, protection, and welfare of children.
