Leh, Jan 30: The Chief Secretary of the Union Territory of Ladakh, Ashish Kundra, on Thursday inaugurated the third edition of the Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League at the NDS Ice Hockey Rink in Leh.
The tournament was formally opened with a ceremonial puck drop led by the Chief Secretary along with senior officials, marking the start of the much-anticipated winter league. Players, organisers, sports lovers and officials gathered at the rink, underlining the steady rise of ice hockey in Ladakh and the region’s growing reputation as a winter sports destination.
Addressing the gathering, Kundra said he was pleased to be part of the sporting event and praised the organisers for their sustained efforts in promoting ice hockey across Ladakh. He noted that participation from teams representing different parts of the region has been increasing with every edition of the league.
The Chief Secretary stressed the need for closer coordination among government bodies, sports associations and private partners to take the championship to an international stage. He said such an expansion could open doors for teams from abroad to compete in Ladakh, further strengthening the region’s sports profile. He also conveyed his best wishes to all participating teams and urged them to uphold the spirit of fair play and discipline throughout the tournament.
Kundra observed that organised winter sports leagues such as this play an important role in bringing communities together, reinforcing regional identity and offering productive engagement for young people during the long winter season.
The opening ceremony was attended by ASP Leh Rishab Shukla, Additional SP Leh Rigzen Sangdup, President of the Ice Hockey Association of Ladakh Namgyal Wangchuk Gyapo, and Regional Lead of Royal Enfield Social Mission Tsewang Dolma, among other officials. Officers from the District Youth Services and Sports Office of Leh and Kargil were also present.
