KHALTSE: Deputy Commissioner Sham, Kunzes Angmo, on Monday launched the five-day “Swachh Gaon, Surakshit Jalvayu” campaign, calling for coordinated community action to strengthen environmental conservation, cleanliness and climate resilience across the district ahead of World Environment Day.
The campaign, scheduled to run from June 1 to June 5, will encompass a series of cleanliness drives, awareness programmes, plantation activities and community outreach initiatives across villages of Sham district, with the administration seeking active participation from local communities and grassroots institutions.
Launching the initiative at Khaltse, the Deputy Commissioner directed officials, Panchayat representatives and village functionaries to ensure effective implementation of the campaign in accordance with the prescribed schedule. She emphasised that environmental sustainability cannot be achieved through government intervention alone and requires sustained public participation and collective responsibility.
Addressing the gathering, Kunzes Angmo urged Numberdars to coordinate closely with concerned departments and mobilise residents to participate in campaign activities. She said efforts aimed at improving sanitation, protecting natural resources and building climate resilience would yield meaningful results only when supported by community-led action at the village level.
The launch programme was attended by Block Development Officer Khaltse Pankaj Rajput, Numberdars from different villages, Panchayat Secretaries, Block Inspectors and officials from various departments.
As part of the programme, the Block Development Officer delivered a detailed presentation on the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, highlighting scientific waste disposal, segregation of waste at source and the importance of responsible waste management practices. The presentation also focused on enhancing public awareness regarding environmental protection and sustainable development.
Officials said the campaign would culminate on June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day, and would serve as a platform to encourage long-term behavioural change towards cleanliness, environmental stewardship and sustainable living practices across Sham district.
The initiative forms part of the administration’s broader efforts to promote community-driven environmental action and strengthen local participation in conservation programmes.
