KHALTSE : With a five-day district-wide environmental campaign set to begin on June 1, the Sham district administration on Saturday reviewed preparedness measures and directed departments to ensure coordinated implementation of activities aimed at promoting cleanliness, environmental conservation and community participation across Panchayats.

Deputy Commissioner Sham, Kunzes Angmo (JKAS), chaired a meeting of officials at the Conference Hall in Khaltse to assess arrangements for the “Swachh Gaon Surakshit Jalvayu” campaign, which will run until June 5 and conclude on World Environment Day.

The campaign will cover various Panchayats across the district and focus on cleanliness drives, waste management, plantation activities, environmental awareness programmes and community-led initiatives designed to encourage sustainable practices at the grassroots level.

Reviewing the programme schedule, the Deputy Commissioner directed all concerned departments to work in close coordination to ensure effective execution of planned activities. She underscored the need for active public participation, stating that community involvement would be central to the success of the campaign.

The administration has also planned Special Gram Sabhas and awareness programmes in villages to promote environmental responsibility and strengthen local engagement in conservation efforts. Officials were instructed to ensure that Panchayats take a proactive role in mobilising residents and conducting outreach activities during the campaign period.

In addition to environmental initiatives, the Deputy Commissioner directed Panchayats to organise awareness programmes on drug abuse, linking social awareness with community development and public well-being. She emphasised that sustained public engagement was essential for building cleaner, healthier and more resilient rural communities.

To broaden participation and visibility of the campaign, officials were asked to establish selfie points at prominent locations across their respective jurisdictions. The initiative is intended to encourage public involvement and generate wider awareness of environmental issues.

The meeting was attended by Sub-Divisional Magistrates Mohd Sharif (Khaltse) and Gurmat Namgail (Liker), Assistant Executive Engineer, PHE, Tsering Samdup, Forest Range Officer Khaltse Deskyong Namgail, Panchayat Inspectors and Panchayat Secretaries from different parts of the district.

The deliberations concluded with a detailed review of departmental responsibilities, coordination mechanisms and logistical arrangements required for the smooth conduct of the campaign, with officials tasked with ensuring timely execution of activities across all Panchayats in Sham district.
