Nubra, May 14 : Deputy Commissioner Nubra, Mukul Beniwal IAS, on Wednesday directed officials to ensure strict implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, with particular emphasis on mandatory four-way segregation of waste at source in accordance with directions issued by the Supreme Court of India.
Chairing a review meeting on solid waste management in Nubra district, the Deputy Commissioner assessed the preparedness of departments and local bodies for enforcement of the new waste management framework and stressed the need for coordinated implementation at the grassroots level.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner instructed Block Development Officers (BDOs) to ensure segregation of waste into wet, dry, sanitary and special-care categories at source, describing effective waste segregation as central to improving waste handling and environmental management across the district.
The deliberations also focused on the identification and documentation of bulk waste generators, strengthening awareness campaigns on waste segregation practices, reviewing the functioning of Solid Resource Management Centres (SRMCs), and mapping material recovery facilities with villages to improve waste processing systems.
Officials additionally reviewed measures for ensuring timely waste collection and streamlining disposal mechanisms in rural and semi-urban areas of the district.
The Deputy Commissioner also directed BDOs to establish a dedicated district-level helpline to address public grievances related to waste collection and sanitation services.
The meeting was attended by Jigmet Raftan, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nubra; Tashi Jorgais; Block Development Officers of Diskit, Panamik and Turtuk; and officials of the Ladakh Renewable Energy Development Agency.
