Leh, May 27 : A week-long traffic enforcement campaign conducted across Leh district from May 19 to May 26 resulted in the issuance of 200 challans, seizure of 15 vehicles and apprehension of three juveniles found driving in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, officials said on Tuesday.
The enforcement drive was carried out through coordinated action involving the Judiciary, Executive Police, Traffic Wing and the Regional Transport Office (RTO), with authorities intensifying monitoring of traffic violations across multiple locations in Leh.
Officials said the campaign focused on curbing unsafe driving practices, improving road discipline and strengthening compliance with traffic regulations amid increasing vehicular movement in the region.
During the operation, enforcement teams conducted extensive inspections and verification drives, leading to action against violators involved in various traffic offences. Fifteen vehicles were seized for serious infractions, while three juveniles were detained for driving unlawfully in contravention of provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
As part of the initiative, a strategic review meeting was also convened under the chairmanship of the Judicial Magistrate. The meeting was attended by Station House Officers, Traffic Wing officials and presidents of the Ladakh Transport Union to discuss enforcement measures and public participation in road safety initiatives.
According to officials, the deliberations focused on evolving a coordinated mechanism to strengthen traffic management and encourage greater community engagement in promoting responsible driving practices.
Authorities stated that the campaign was aimed not only at enforcing traffic laws but also at creating awareness among residents and visitors regarding safe road behaviour and adherence to legal driving norms.
Meanwhile, officials issued a stern warning to violators with pending challans, directing them to clear dues without delay. They said failure to comply would invite blacklisting of the concerned vehicles by the Regional Transport Office, potentially restricting their legal operation on public roads.
Officials maintained that the enforcement campaign forms part of a broader effort to instil long-term road safety awareness and foster a culture of responsible driving across the region.
The administration expressed hope that sustained enforcement measures, combined with public cooperation, would contribute towards reducing traffic violations and enhancing safety for all road users in Leh district.
