KARGIL: Additional Deputy Commissioner Imteeaz Kacho on Wednesday urged the community to recognise specially-abled children as “blessed and capable,” while addressing an Ability Mela held to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Munshi Habibullah Mission Higher Secondary School in Kargil.
The programme was hosted by the District Social and Tribal Welfare Department in partnership with the Health and School Education Departments, Rewa-na-Kasco, Baqirya Health Care and Research Centre and the Regional Art and Theatre Group. Senior officials, school authorities, social workers and parents attended the gathering.
Special children performed cultural items reflecting their resilience and artistic talent, while a skit by RaNTHAG highlighted inclusion and dignity. Applauding the performances, the ADC said disabilities do not limit achievements and cited renowned scientist Stephen Hawking’s contributions as an example of overcoming physical barriers.
In its corporate social responsibility initiative, the Truck Cooperatives Union Kargil donated a cheque of ₹3 lakh to the District Social Welfare Officer to strengthen welfare programmes for children with disabilities.
DSWO Dr Shahzad Sarwar, in his welcome remarks, announced plans for skill-enhancement camps aimed at imparting vocational abilities and promoting financial independence among beneficiaries. Director MHMHSS Gulzar Hussain advocated stronger rehabilitation opportunities and detailed the ongoing efforts of Rewa-na-Kasco.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks acknowledging the combined support of departments, organisations and families in promoting inclusion for all.
