Leh, Mar 31: Former Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, on Monday held an extensive meeting in Leh with a delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit from Drass, where issues relating to territorial jurisdiction, healthcare, connectivity and tourism development were discussed.
The delegation, led by District President Fayyaz Ahmad Qari, pressed for a formal demarcation of the boundary between Kashmir and Drass, reiterating that Ladakh’s jurisdiction should extend up to Sonamarg. Land-related matters also figured in the discussions, including concerns linked to land identified in Kargil district for the proposed Kargil Sarai.
Highlighting gaps in emergency response systems, the delegation called for the strengthening of helicopter evacuation services to address medical emergencies and disaster situations in the region. It also stressed the need for uninterrupted telecommunications connectivity along the Srinagar–Leh National Highway, citing recent disruptions that have affected mobility and communication.
Tourism development in the Drass Valley emerged as another area of focus, with the delegation proposing projects aimed at enhancing the region’s economic prospects. Suggestions included the development of a scenic lake, installation of a gondola system, and the creation of a White Tulip Garden to attract visitors and diversify tourism offerings.
Concerns over healthcare infrastructure were also raised, with the delegation urging the creation of additional posts, improved staffing levels and better availability of medical personnel and facilities at the Sub-District Hospital in Drass. Given the region’s position as a gateway to Ladakh, the need for a more responsive and well-equipped healthcare system was emphasised.
Members of the BJP Drass unit acknowledged Namgyal’s engagement with regional concerns and expressed hope that the issues raised would be addressed in a timely manner.
Responding to the delegation, Namgyal assured that the concerns would be taken up at appropriate forums. He said efforts would be made to address developmental and public welfare issues to support sustained growth in Drass and the wider Ladakh region.
