DOHA, APR 7: Bahraini law enforcement has detained two suspects in an alleged spying scheme on behalf of Iran, the country’s public prosecutor’s office said.
The prosecutor’s office stated that the two are suspected of spying and working for Iranian intelligence services and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), allegedly receiving instructions to monitor sensitive targets in Bahrain, gather information, and transmit it to Iran.
The detentions follow a spike in tensions, as last week’s protests in Bahrain were triggered by the death of a 32‑year‑old man in police custody, arrested on charges of espionage for Iran. His family alleges torture during custody, which Bahraini authorities have denied. Local rights activists also report that Bahrain has detained at least 250 people since the start of the West Asia conflict.
