NEW DELHI, May 22: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday announced plans to launch a “smart border” project within a year to strengthen security along India’s some 6,000 km frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Speaking at the Border Security Force’s annual Rustamji Memorial lecture, Shah said the initiative will use technology — including drones, radars and smart cameras — to build an “impenetrable” border and prevent attempts to change local demographics. He said the government will create a “strong security grid” along both frontiers and vowed to identify and deport infiltrators.
Shah said the project will be rolled out in the 60th year since the BSF’s raising and signalled upcoming consultations with chief ministers of border states such as Tripura, West Bengal and Assam on security measures. He also said a previously announced high‑powered demography mission will be formally unveiled soon.
